Mean and Green Whispers from the Void

One of the benefits of a store being a GAMA member and attending the GAMA trade show, is that if they pre-ordered the initial release of Champions, they could also get the next two Company boxes at the same time (and be able to sell them as soon as they had them).

My friendly not-so-local (it is an hour and a half drive without traffic) game store Dragon's Lair Columbus did just that, so I was able to pick up both the goblin and nightstalker companies 7 weeks ago when they got their first shipment in.

First up is Grunk Blackclaw - the goblin in dwarf juggernaut armor!

I have to apologize here.  When I went up there on a Monday night (when they regularly play Kings of War) I planned to not only pick up the boxes, but do demos as well (and I did get in two demos).  I knew what was in the boxes, and already had the base miniatures (not the cards, nor the champions), so I went ahead and brought them.

Of course I opened the boxes as soon as I go them in my grubby paws - and without giving the blog (or you dearest reader) a second thought, found a spot and put the champions together.  Which was good, because the second demo was with long time goblin player Cyle Dinolord Pool - and he wanted to play goblins.

Not only that, the next afternoon I immediately primed them and started painting them.

So, unfortunately, I don't have pictures of the component parts for you.  And as I look through my phone, I realized I didn't take pictures of any of the unpainted minis for these two companies at all.   I do have six companies now ready for Origins (starting in two days) however.

So back to the review.  The goblin company has a troop of rabble, a troop of sharpsticks, a mincer and Grunk Blackclaw.

Both the rabble and sharpsticks are made from the new(er) hard plastic goblin sprue - you can see all the details about it here.  This sprue also makes sharpsticks.

I like my troops to be 8 to a multi-base, instead of the standard 10.
Grunk's Stabbers

Grunk's Jabbers

To be totally honest (and you expect nothing less here), I actually have had these models all assembled and waiting to be painted for (OMG - I just looked at the date from the pose I referenced above) almost five years!  My plan had been to replace the regiments of rabble, sharpsticks and spitters in my 750 point Kings of War Ambush demo army.  (Those goblins were all from the original sprues and the metal conversion bits).  However those are not going to be replaced now - and that army is most likely going to be removed from my Ambush demo armies (kind of planning that for all the Champions companies).  I have 23 (out of 29 possible lists) - I do not need that many.  So as Champions come out I will take out the corresponding Ambush army.  (Leaving me right now with only 17 - and I'm only going to bring 12 to Origins for my 8 player Learn to Play events.

I did build the new mincer from the box.  I had some of the old ones, but wanted the newest one.  You can see the sprue and details for it here.  (Yes, it is the same model now used for Ogre and Orc chariots, as well as the mincer).

The mincer model does NOT come with a driver - but if you don't use all your goblins from the hard plastic sprues (like me), then you will have some left over.  Just make a model and don't glue on a shield, and cut off the weapon it is holding.

Grunk's Grinder

Grunk Blackclaw himself!

The full company

Of course the box included the cards, mdf bases, and another mdf 'puzzle' fragment.

The other company box is The Voidtalon

The first unit is scarecrows.  The sprue for these came out 2018 (and you can see the sprue here),  I had two regiments of them, so just cut one in half.

Shadow Harvesters

Next is The Bloody Mist - a unit of reapers.  I have intended (as much as possible) to always use the newest models (even if it takes years).  So I reused a troop of reapers from my Ambush army.  You can see the new sprues here.  These the older restic ones - but I feel they are close enough, I needed to get the unit done.

The Bloody Mist
The third unit are butchers.  These are the new hard plastic sprues (they are simply bigger than the older monopose models.  (For these you can make a mix of the butchers and tormenters for the unit if you wish).

Hammers of the Void

Finally is the champion itself - with less of a name than a title.  A corrupted frostwing from the Northern Alliance / Free Dwarfs, it has etheric feathers (and its legs are instead human like (with it's claws being clawed hands) - making it just a little more creepy.

The full company

Of course cards and multi-bases are in the box, as well as another puzzle piece.

So the puzzle still has three pieces to go.

Because it is all fun and games . . .
