Double How You Use It!

I've been very lax in my duties here lately, so today you get two tournament reports for the price of one (what a bargain!!!!)

Origins 2024 - How You Use It!

Saturday, June 22nd, 2024, (yes, this is quite a bit late) at Origins in Columbus OH, we once again had our How You Use It! tournament - where the players move but the armies don't - so they get to use (and play against) three different armies as well as three different opponents.  I like to run this at conventions because it doesn't require anyone to bring anything other than dice (and I can provide those for up to 12 players).  Especially since we are now using Ambush 750 point lists it is light, fast and fun.

(Front - Kyle Ritchey (ringer), Grace Patterson.  Back - Mark Zielinski, Kara Brown, Sid Trowbridge, Erich Trowbridge, Sam Kula and Ryan Bonner.  Not pictured - Peter Shah)

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon - well I guess as I hadn't left the convention center / hotel (which was attached) since I'd arrived Wednesday night.  But we had eight players ready for some fun!

Round 1

Sid Trowbridge v Peter Shah

Kara Brown v Mark Zielinski

Ryan Bonner v Grace Patterson

Erich Trowbridge v Sam Kula

Round 2 then got started.  Sid decided that the tournament wasn't for him, so Kyle stepped in

Sam Kula v Kara Brown

Ryan Bonner v Kyle Ritchey

Grace Patterson v Peter Shah

Erich Trowbridge and Mark Zielinski taking selfies in the middle of the game!

Anyone who has ever run a tournament knows how busy you can get - talking to people, socializing, watching games - and basically forgetting to take pictures of the third round!

  • Kyle Ritchey v Kara Brown
  • Sam Kula v Ryan Bonner
  • Grace Patterson v Mark Zielinski
  • Erich Trowbridge v Peter Shah
At least I remembered to get pictures of the winners

Kara Brown took third place

Erich Trowbridge took second (while his son attempts to control his enthusiasm for his Dad's finish)

Grace Patterson took First Place ( well, she couldn't win best sportsperson since we don't do that for HYUI - so she just took the top spot instead).

Mark was the honorary stepping stone, as he played each of the top three players!  It was a lot of fun, and I was glad to see a decent turnout.

Final Rankings

  1. Grace Patterson (49 points)
  2. Erich Trowbridge (48 points)
  3. Kara Brown (43 points)
  4. Mark Zielinski (36 points)
  5. Peter Shah (31 points)
  6. Ryan Bonner (30 points)
  7. Sid/Kyle (29 points)
  8. Sam Kula (26 points)

Six weeks later, we did it all over again in Indianapolis!
