3rd and North

Coming this October is the hotly anticipated 3rd edition of Kings of War.  Pre-orders are up on the Mantic web site, or even better would be have your FLGS get them for you.  Ordering (and buying) from your local store is a great way to help build your local community (and maybe even get your store to stocking more products as they come out).

So, what exactly is coming?

First off is the new 3rd edition rule book.  This is listed as a limited edition hardback - so I'm personally hoping that means a gamer's edition will be coming soon (I really like the smaller softbound book for taking with me).

If you are completely new to Kings of War, there is a brand new 2 player starter set coming out.

Shadows in the North: Kings of War 2-Player Starter Set
MGKWM102 £74.99/€89.99/$99.99
The Nightstalkers have come.  Having slithered past the Northern Alliance's defences, an army now marches towards the fortress city of Chill with a terrible, insatiable hunger. The desperate patrols of the Northern Alliance must hold them back at all costs, or risk losing their homelands and the secret at the heart of the city that they have sworn to protect.

Kings of War is a mass-battle fantasy wargame set in the world of Pannithor. Rank upon rank of soldiers march into bloody combat, while winged demons battle fiery dragons overhead. From launching devastating bombardments of artillery, to tactically out-flanking your opponent’s forces, Kings of War is a game of exciting, expansive fantasy battles. This starter set contains two great plastic starter armies for Kings of War –the foul Nightstalkers and the noble Northern Alliance –a book with the full game rules and complete army lists for 14 different factions, and a getting started booklet to help you with your first games.

  • 44 Northern Alliance miniatures:
    • 40 Hard Plastic Clansmen / PackHunters,
    • 3 PVC Plastic Snow Trolls,
    • 1 PVC Plastic Ice Kin Master Hunter;
  • 44 Nightstalkers miniatures:
    • 40 Hard Plastic Scarecrows / Spectres,
    • 3 PVC Plastic Butchers,
    • 1 PVC Plastic Horror;
  • Square Bases;
  • 144-page Rulebook,
  • Getting Started booklet

This mentions the 144-page Rulebook - which I'm hoping is the new gamer's edition that will be available separately soon.

We have seen all these Nightstalkers in the army and mega-army (though I am interested in seeing how they are packaged - since the Butchers and Horror did not share the same sprue for Vanguard).  The same for Snow Trolls and the Ice Kin Master Hunter (or is it a new model?)

For those who have been waiting for the Northern alliance as an army, they are also being released in October (which means my Varangur demo army is now a Northern Alliance army, and I'll need to make a new Varangur one :-) ).

First off is the army box

Northern Alliance Army  MGKWL101
The Winterlands of Nordgaredare harsh and unforgiving place, where only the toughest survive. It is from the northern tribes that make their homes here that the Northern Alliance draws many of its soldiers. The hardy clans-people of the north are drawn to Chill for its protection and ample resources; and they are all too happy to fight alongside the warriors of the Ice Kin and their summoned elementals.

  • 30 Hard Plastic Clansmen/Pack Hunters,
  • 3 Resin Ice Elementals,
  • 1 Metal Lord/Skald,
  • 1 Metal Ice Kin Bolt Thrower with Crew,
  • Square Bases
The new hard plastic kit makes clansmen or pack hunters (I'm guessing the pack hunters have spears)

The metal lord / skald has alternate arms and head for either model

Finally is the new metal bolt thrower, which includes a sled that holds ammo for it,

The ice elementals are the normal (not transluscent) resin models  (I hope they include the alternate head)

Of course, there is also a Mega-army

Northern Alliance Mega Army  MGKWL102
The Northern Alliance are a powerful young kingdom found in the frozen north of the world. In few short decades, they have risen from obscurity to become a prominent force against the abyss. The birth of this new kingdom and its growing influence has not gone unnoticed. Talannar’s Northern Alliance must keep a constant vigil against those that would threaten it and seek to uncover its mysteries.

  • 20 Hard Plastic Clansmen/Pack Hunters,
  • 10 Hard Plastic and Resin Ice Naiads,
  • 10 PVC Plastic Ice Naiads,
  • 10 PVC Plastic Half-Elf Berserkers,
  • 10 PVC Plastic Ice Kin Hunters,
  • 10 PVC Plastic Huscarls,
  • 9 PVC Plastic Snow Trolls,
  • 1 PVC Plastic and Resin Snow Troll Prime,
  • 1 Resin Thegn on Frostfang

Some interesting information here.  Of course this is several of the new plastic sprues.  The second item though is also new - resin conversion bits for the existing hard plastic naiads (to make ice naiads)

The Naiads, Half Elf Berserkers, Ice Kin Hunters, Huscarls, and Snow Trolls are all the existing Vanguard models - so you get 10 baggies of these.

However you also get resin bits to make the 10th troll a Prime.  I'd like to see this come out separately (or at least the bits for it).

Finally is a new Thegn rider for the frost fang.  Again it would be nice if they eventually offered this separately.

One sneaky bit are the snow foxes.  This is not a unit you can buy - I believe they are the 'pets' on the new plastic sprues.

In addition to the army boxes, there are a few more things coming.  The biggest is, of course, the frost giant!

Northern Alliance Frost Giant  MGKWL401
Giants have lived in Pannithorsince before even the noble races became dominant. They have an ancient heritage that binds them to the gods of old. From the ice encrusted cliffs on the coast of The Crystal Sea and as far as Drakes End, the dominion of the Frost Giants has remained theirs for thousands of years. Frost Giants rarely leave the Arctic Wastes but on occasion they may drift south in ones or twos, searching for food, or to resolve some issue that has angered them. Astoundingly, Talannarhas managed to not only communicate with these elusive and dangerous titans, but the armies of the Alliance now boast these immense and powerful beings within their ranks.

There are also the new metal tundra wolves

Northern Alliance Tundra Wolves Troop  MGKWL302
Packs of Tundra Wolves are commonly spread throughout the northern regions of Mantica. Their thick arctic fur is a prized possession among the human tribes and clans, but many have also become semi-domesticated. The ultimate prize for any hunter are wolf pups, which, when trained, become ferocious guardians and invaluable hunting aides.

The lord/skald model is available separately

Northern Alliance Lord/Skald  MGKWL201
Skalds are the very essence of the clans and their collective memory and experiences. Little is physically documented and tradition dictates that all the memories, knowledge and history of the tribes and clans are learnt, maintained and retold by their skalds. They can be fierce fighters, knowing what dies with them, and they are hugely revered and protected by their tribe.

Finally, the brand new resin Chimera is also coming out.

Northern Alliance Lord on Chimera  MGKWL402
Pannithor’s history, its turmoil and trials, the currents of magic that ripple through the earth and skies, have all had a profound effect on the world and the creatures that have evolved there, whether naturally or through pain, suffering, and the meddling of gods. One of the more bizarre beasts is the chimera, a hybrid of a frostfang, goat and drakon. Sporting three heads, wings, and a bladed tail, these towering abominations are favoured as mounts by particularly reckless clan lords.

OK, I'm not doing a full NA army, but I want the Chimera!!!

Because it is all fun and games . . .
