Mantic Forum: Abyssal Halfbreeds

I also finished up the Abyssal Halfbreeds

Time to switch back to the other dwarfs (their blog is here : Bugman's Brewery - Puggimer's Drunk Dwarf Blog) for a little bit (Yes, I'm working on two armies at the same time - both for Adepticon).

Fantastic paint job as always, Sir- especially the banner! Incidentally, where did you get the lava bases from or did you make them yourself? J.

Super paint job, my Elves and Dwarves need to set sail one day to point out the error of their ways to these half-breeds.
Great work and keep us posted on your armies progress.

Thanks. I made the lava bases - pretty simple. 3/8" (that's 5mm for those on the right side of the pond :-) ) cork torn and glued to the base, then sand glued on top for texture. I pinned all the figures to the bases as I cut off the circles they come with, which didn't leave much to glue them with. Undercoat everything black, then a simple two layer drybrush of grey on the tops and sides, and the lava is dark orange, orange, yellow and a tiny bit of white. A little drybrush of yellow on the rocks that face the lava, edge in black and done.

I like valejo's game color paints - so used Cold Gray (72.050), Stonewall Grey (72.049), Hot Orange (72.009), Orange Fire (72.008), Sun Yellow (72.006), Dead White (72.001) and Black (72.051) for the bases. I'm trying to use a limited pallette for these, and kind of laugh because I'm using more colors on the bases than I do for my 'normal' ones (which usually only have 4 colors + static grass).

I still haven't decided what to do with the movement trays however - solid black (like the edges of the figures) or add sand and dry brush like the rocks, or even add some lava channels to the trays (though I think adding cork will be overkill on them).

Nice work, the banner is especially funky.

Please post a photo of all the units you've painted so far ranked up. I'll bet the combined effect of those bases looks blummin' brilliant!
