December 2014 Newsletter

Ho Ho Ho.  With two and a half weeks until Christmas, it is time for another update on what is happening with Mantic in SW Ohio.

The escalation league is in its final month.  While I'm a little disappointed in the lack of people actually getting their final builds in on time, I'm hoping that will be tempered by the fun battles to be had over the next four weeks.  One advantage is that the Hobby Shop is now open until 9 pm through Christmas, so we won't be keeping anyone there late just for us!  December is also the chance to get your extra build points in for a display board, wound counters, objective markers or a turn counter (3 pts max).

And to top things off, we have confirmation that our league tournament will be on January 17th!  This 1000 pt Kings of War tournament is open to anyone, even if you didn't participate in the league.  Some come on by in January and get in a few battles to warm you up.  Doors open at 10:00 am, cost is $10, and I hope to have the first game start at 11:00.

Not only are we having the league tournament, but in February (specifically February 21st) we are having the Class of Kings Regional qualifier!  The Clash of Kings tournament is at Adepticon in Chicago on March 19th - this is a chance to win free admission to the tournament.  Chicago held theirs over Thanksgiving weekend - congratulation to Mike Muller on his win.  Since Mike is a pathfinder and is actually going to be helping to run the Clash of Kings (and playing as the ringer if we end up with an odd number of players), he graciously gave his entry to the tournament to 2nd place winner Shannon Shoemaker.  The Ohio qualifier is 1500 pts, with a max of 4 of any unit/size, and allies are allowed (one ally, up to 25% (375 pts)).  Registration starts at 10:00 when The Hobby Shop opens, first game will be at 11:00.  There is a $10 fee for this event.

If you don't do Facebook, then you don't know that there are some great Mantic groups out there.  Mantic Maniacs and the Kings of War US Players groups both have monthly painting challenges, where all you have to do is declare what you will paint in the month (with pictures of the unpainted miniatures) and then pictures of the completed miniatures when they are done before the end of the month.  If you were aware of these, then you may have seen that I did a challenge to paint up a Martian Dreadball team (from Mars Attacks!).  Why?  Because we are starting a Dreadball league at the Hobby Shop in February on Monday nights.  The league will run for February and March, and we will have a final match of Ultimate Dreadball (6 players) to cap it off, and then a Dreadball tournament in April (more details on that to come).

Just in time to get you inspired for the league - the first wave of the Dreadball Xtreme kickstarter is shipping!!!  This is the base game, and should be in all the backers hands before Christmas.  If we can get the Dreadball Season 4 rules in time, then we will allow those teams into the league as well (Asterian Kalyshi, Convicts, Kovossian Mutants and Mechanites).

And if that isn't enough Dreadball to get you interested, by request I am going to be holding a Dreadball tournament at Origins this year!  This will be on Friday afternoon / evening, and should be a lot of fun for everyone!  So you can use the league to learn to play (and get your team painted), then come and show everyone who the Dayton and Origins champions are!

Back to Adepticon - registration opened with a bang - the Clash of Kings almost sold out.  There is a slight mix up right now on Saturday night (the current schedule shows both the mega-battle and the campaign running at the same time).  If you want to get in some Kings of War on Saturday night, then the campaign is the event that is going forward.  We plan to also have something on Friday in conjunction with Geek Nation Tours but that is still in flux.

If you are a Deadzone fan, then December will be the release of the new Forward Strongpoint battlezone - this contains terrain sprues that cannot be found in any other kit!  22 sprues and 5 connector sprues, this is a great way to protect your forces on Nexus Psi from the plague.  Speaking of forces, the Forge Fathers are finally arriving and are also being released this month.  This includes the awesome Urban Iron Ancestor to give the Forge Fathers a walker to go toe-to-toe with the others big mechs in the game.  Lastly, the Martian Dreadball team is being released at the end of the month.  The martians found a portal to an alternate universe, and the ones who crossed over fell in love with Dreadball!  They are cheating little sneaks, bringing weapons onto the pitch, so if you want to cause even more bloodshed in the game (and aren't afraid of the refs seeing your foul) then you can pick them up and blast the other team.

The kickstarter for the Kings of War Second Edition rulebook was very successful, funding not only the new version of the rules, but the start of both an Abyssal army and a Nature army.  Now begins the long wait for things to come out next July!

Make sure to update your calendars, as it is always good to plan ahead for upcoming tournaments and conventions:
1/17/15 - End of League Tournament (1000 pt Kings of War)
2/2/15 - 3/30/15 - Dayton Dreadball League
2/21/15 - Adepticon Regional Championship (1500 pt Kings of War)
3/19/15 - 3/23/15 - Adepticon - (Chicago IL) 1500 pt Kings of War,
12,000 + point big battle, a fun campain event (1000 pts +
500 pt allie force). Plus lots of Deadzone and Dreadball.
3/??/15 - Dayton Dreadball Tournament
4/17/15 - OHCon (Toledo OH) - I'll have more information as I get it.
5/1-3/15 - Cincycon (Cincinnati OH).  Dreadball and Kings of War.  (More to come)
6/5/15 - 6/8/15 - Origins (Columbus OH)
7/30/15 - 8/3/15 - GenCon (Indianapolis IN)

I'm always looking for feedback, so feel free to drop me a line at puggimer@gmail.com .  Keep painting and playing!

November 2014 Newsletter

Leaves are (finally) raked, the weather has warmed back up to 'normal' fall levels, the politicians and ghosts have crawled back into their holes to quit frightening us, and the annual American celebration of gluttony and football is almost upon us, so it is time for another newsletter.

The third build month and second game month of the escalation league is nearly done - remember to make sure you show me your finished 300 pts for November by the end of the month!  Almost everyone has their games in, though there are a few people that need to play yet tonight.  Remember, starting next week we play 1000 pt games.  December is also a chance to catch up on your painting if you didn't finish a month, as well as some time to make the extras (display board, wound counters, wavering tokens, objective tokens, turn counter) for those important extra points.

I am still waiting for final confirmation, but the plan is to have the end-of-league tournament on January 17th at the Hobby Shop.  Doors open at 10 am, and I'd like to have the first game start by 11 am.  The cost will be $10, and this is open to everyone - whether you played in the league or not.

If you like Kings of War, have you heard of the "Kings of War Fantasy Battle Game - 2nd Edition" kickstarter?  The new edition is coming this summer, and you can get a copy of both the hardback book with all the rules, background and even hobby tips as well as the smaller softback gamer's rulebook (which has everything you need to play the game (without the fluff) in an easily transportable format) for a pledge of only $50!  Or you can add in army deals with the book for $150 - and get great deals on armies to build.  It ends at 6:59 pm EST - so you only have a week left.  Check it out at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1744629938/kings-of-war-fantasy-battle-game-2nd-edition .

What is next for us after this?  How about some Dreadball?  Yes, the first Dayton Dreadball league will be starting in February on Monday nights at the Hobby Shop.  If you haven't played, then come by on Mondays in January and learn to play this fun game.  The best point is that it won't hurt your wallet too badly, as all you need is a team - and they only cost about $20 (and the Hobby Shop has several).  More details to come.  Adeticon tournament rules (which we will use for this) are available here : http://www.puggimer.net/documents/Adepticon_CoK2015.pdf.

In February (planning on the 21st, but waiting for date confirmation) we are planning on having a Kings of War Adepticon Regional at the Hobby Shop.  This is a 1500 pt tournament using the Adepticon rules, to get ready for the big Clash of Kings tournament at Adepticon.  Cost is again $10, and in addition to any other prize support, the winner will get free admission into the Clash of Kings tournament at Adepticon.  We are limited to a max of 16 players.

Speaking of Adepticon - if you are planning on going registration begins tonight (11/24/14) at 9:00 pm EST.  Adepticon is known for its great swag bags - usually worth close to $100 in freebies, but these are generally limited to the first 1000 people to register (so they sell out very quickly).  Mantic has a huge number of events, including plans for a "Mantic night" featuring games, Q/A with Ronnie Renton, and even pizza!  Registration is at http://www.adepticon.org/ (and check out more details on Mantic at Adepticon on their blog (http://manticblog.com/2014/11/07/registration-for-mantic-events-opening-soon/).

Deadzone wave 2 has shipped, and we are starting to see Asterians and Forge Fathers (well, except for the Forge Guard, who are taking a leisurely cruise from China before they plan to conquer Nexus Psi) battling the Plague and other factions.

Not only that, but Mars Attacks! is also out.  The flying saucers and trucks are being released this month, and I expect that the big stompy robot (this guy is huge - 7" tall) will be available soon.

Dreadball Extreme is getting ready to ship, with those lucky players in the UK being able to pick their first wave up at the Mantic Open Day on November 29th.  So if normal Dreadball is just to tame for you - Extreme ups the body count and the number of teams (from 12 to 24), with eventual rules to play all the teams in either game!

Make sure to update your calendars, as it is always good to plan ahead for upcoming tournaments and conventions:
1/17/15 - End of League Tournament (date to be confirmed)
2/21/15 - Adepticon Primer (date to be confirmed)
3/19/15 - 3/23/15 - Adepticon - (Chicago IL) 1500 pt Kings of War,
12,000 + point big battle, a fun campain event (1000 pts +
500 pt allie force). Plus lots of Deadzone and Dreadball.

October 2014 Newsletter

Well it is the time of year when the leaves are all dropping, and we all fear to hear the inevitable knocking of beggars at our doors - however luckily the politicians will soon be gone and we can have normal ads for products we don't need instead of asking for us to vote for people we don't want.

October has been a very busy month, at least for me.  The second Kings of War escalation league is going great - almost all the 400 point games are finished (I believe we need 2 more in, which will hopefully happen tonight).  Plus the next builds have started to trickle in (ok, so mine is done - where's everyone elses? :-) ).

The Legendary Game Faire II was a lot of fun!  We had 9 people for the 1000 pt Kings of War tournament, and much fun was had by all.  I even showed off my Drunk Dwarf army (which went on to take Best Painted at the WFB GT that weekend).  Then this past weekend was the premier Kings of War tournament down in West Virginia at Charcon!  We had 5 people turn out for this, and hope to get committment for more to do it again next year.  I think that this is about the limit to how far I can go (with Adepticon being the exception, of course) for a tournament - however we'll see.  Everyone had a lot of fun though.  Congratulation to all the winners for both tournaments - and don't forget you can always check your scores at http://warscore.net.  If you register your email on the site, then you can even see how you rank against other players across the six tournaments I've run this year (well, it will be six once the size limit of 10 players is removed, so for now it is 2).

I've heard that Deadzone Wave 2 has shipped, and that the final plastic sprues are on the boat.  Not only that, but as of today Mars Attacks! is shipping to backers.  Watch for Dreadball Xtreme to start shipping Wave 1 at the end of November - just in time for Christmas.  And if you didn't kickstart it, the base game for Mars Attacks! is now in stores.  If your Friendly Local Game Store doesn't have it, ask them to order it as distributors have it in stock.  And you can always ask your friendly local pathfinder for a demo or a game - I hang out at the Hobby Shop on Monday nights and the third saturday of every month.

Politicians are not the only scary thing in October - zombies are also out there.  Mantic has their new sci-fi zombies available - you can get 30 of them in the Deadzone:Contagion expansion (along with the awesome ruined Deadzone scenery, the Contagion book and AI decks for solo play) or on their own.  These are not just for deadzone, but will work for any modern or sci-fi game, and are completely compatible with Mantics fantasy zombies and ghouls!  (Oh, did I mention that Mars Attacks! will have rules for solo play against zombies as well!).

Zombies aren't the only new models out for Deadzone however.  The Asterians and Forge Fathers are now available (ok, some of the Forge Fathers are a little delayed, but should be shipping soon), as well as the new striders.  The awesome thing is that this one kit makes three varieties, usable by the Enforcers, Rebs and the Plague.  So yes, I'm going to have to get three of these (Hi, my name is Michael and I'm a miniature addict).

I've mentioned to several people that I plan to run a Dreadball league once the current Kings of War escalation league wraps up.  Dreadball is now back in stock, so you can pick up the game if you want a copy, or pick up a team to play.  Not only that, but Mantic Digital now has the rules for Dreadball for Free!  Check out their download site at http://www.manticgames.com/free-rules.html for all the game downloads (including rules for Kings of War, Dreadball and Warpath, and army lists).

Make sure to keep your calendars updated:
1/??/15 - End of League Tournament
2/??/15 - Adepticon Primer
3/19/15 - 3/23/15 - Adepticon - (Chicago IL) 1500 pt Kings of War,
12,000 + point big battle, a fun campain event (1000 pts +
500 pt allie force). Plus lots of Deadzone and Dreadball.
4/17/15 - OHCon (Toledo OH) - I'll have more information as I get it.
5/1-3/15 - Cincycon (Cincinnati OH) - Not sure the exact date, but I plan on running more
Kings of War there again (and maybe Dreadball).
6/5/15 - 6/8/15 - Origins (Columbus OH)
7/30/15 - 8/3/15 - GenCon (Indianapolis IN)

As always, feel free to drop me a line at puggimer@gmail.com with any questions or comments.

September 2014 Newsletter

School has started, the mornings are pleasantly crisp, and now is the time for more gaming!  This is a bit early this month (mainly because I'm not waiting until the last minute) so I can make sure to highlight a few things going on in September.

Our second Kings of War Escalation league is off and running.  We have some very enthusiastic new people joining us this round, as well as many returning 'old timers' (never though I'd describe a 10 year old girl as an 'old timer', did you?).  Everyone is furiously working on their models, and getting anxious for the games to start in October.  It is never to late to join in on the fun - we meet every Monday from 6 - 9 and the third Saturday of each month from 1 - 5 down at the Hobby Shop.

If you already have a 1000 point army and want to get in some more competition, then don't forget about the tournament at Legendary Game Faire II.  This will be Friday night, October 3rd, with checkin at 6 pm.  Cost is only $10.  It is being held in Springfield OH at the Quality Inn and Conference Center.  Check out my web page for all the info on it at http://puggimer.net/lgf.htm .

If you are willing to go a bit further, then on October 25th at CharCon in Charleston West Virginia we are also having a 1000 pt tournament.  All the information for this is at http://puggimer.net/charcon.htm .  There is no additional cost for this after you purchase your charcon badge.

Make sure you watch the skies.  Is that really a meteor shower that looks so spectacular in the evening, or something more sinister.  Mars Attacks! is scheduled to ship at the end of this month.  This is a fast, fun game based on the Deadzone rules, but playable out of the box (the only assembly required is for the terrain, and that is minimal).  Lot's of weird, fun things happen in a game (can you say burning cows and giant bugs?), and be prepared for your models to die quickly and horribly as the heroes of Greenville fight to save humanity.  I'll be holding demos during the escalation league meetings in September, so drop on by even if you aren't in the league and give this game a try.

Deadzone wave 2 is almost done shipping to the kickstarter backers - which means it will be available to everyone else soon.  Pick up the new Forge Fathers or Asterian factions for new and different ways to play, or pick up a strider or stuntbot to bolster your existing forces!  And if you wanted to mix up your martians (or human forces) in Deadzone then watch for the card decks to use your Mars Attacks! models in Deadzone.  Plus with halloween coming up, who doesn't love zombies - and the new sci-fi zombies will be released just in time, as well as the Deadzone Contagion expansion (which includes an AI deck to play solo).

Make sure to update your calendars, as it is always good to plan ahead for upcoming tournaments and conventions:
10/3/14 - LGF II - (Springfield OH) Kings of War 1000 pt Tournament
10/25/14 - Charcon - (Charleston WV) Kings of War 1000 pt Tournament
1/??/15 - End of League Tournament
2/??/15 - Adepticon Primer
3/19/15 - 3/23/15 - Adepticon - (Chicago IL) 1500 pt Kings of War,
12,000 + point big battle, a fun campain event (1000 pts +
500 pt allie force). Plus lots of Deadzone and Dreadball.
4/17/15 - OHCon (Toledo OH) - I'll have more information as I get it.
6/5/15 - 6/8/15 - Origins (Columbus OH)
7/30/15 - 8/3/15 - GenCon (Indianapolis IN)

August 2014 Newsletter

Wow, there just seems to be a huge amount to talk about this month, so let’s get started.

First, Gencon was fantastic.  Thanks to everyone that came by and played a game, small or big.  Even if I lost my voice and it is now still recovering, I had a great time and I hope everyone that played in any of my events (and I had a total of 152 people play) had as much fun as I did.

Keeping my promise of only sending this out once a month sometimes is hard.  I had been putting off setting things up for Legendary Game Faire II until after Gencon, but then I realized that it is the first weekend of October, which is coming up MUCH sooner than I thought.
What is the LGF?  It is a small tournament that they are hoping to eventually become a full fledged game convention.  The big highlight is the WFB GT on Saturday and Sunday, but what we care about is the Kings of War Tournament on Friday, October 3rd.  Checking is at 6:00 pm.  This is a 1000 pt tournament (here’s a question, as people build their armies, is everyone still interested in just 1000 pts, or do you want to make it bigger (1500)?  The LGF is being held at the Quality Inn and Conference Center, 383 East Leffel Lane, Springfield Ohio 45505.  Registration and more information is on the LGF site http://www.legendarygamefaire.com/registration.html - click the dropdown menu for the Friday Kings of War.  Cost is $10.  I believe I have two people pre-registered so far.  Let’s see if we can make this the biggest Kings of War tournament in the US (currently that is 10 people at last year’s Adepticon).  For more information and tournament rules, check out http://www.puggimer.net/lgf.htm .

You don’t have a Kings of War army you say?  That is easily fixed – as the next Kings of War Escalation League is currently forming.  I’ve learned some things from the prior league, so there should not be any times when you show up to play and no one else is ready.  First league night is September 8th (because the store is closed Labor Day evening).  September is just a build month (400 points), then in October you will be playing your 400 pt armies while you build an additional 300 pts.  In November we are playing 700 point games while building the last 300 pts, then in December we are playing full 1000 pt games.  Then in January we’ll have a tournament to cap it off.  This is free, and is every Monday night from 6 pm to 9 pm, and every third Saturday of the month from 1 pm to 5 pm.  To register simply email me with your name, phone number, email address (oh, I guess I have that if you are emailing me) and the army you are going to build.  Full details will be http://www.puggimer.net/kowleague.htm (currently is it last year’s league information, but soon to be updated).

Have you heard about the new Mantic kickstarter – Dungeon Sagas: Dwarf Kings Quest.  This is a dungeon crawl board game that is in the spirit of HeroQuest/Warhammer Quest.  It is playable out of the box (no assembly required) and the basic game is playable by anyone – no experience with miniature games required.  But don’t let that scare you off as being too simple – it includes an advanced version where you can customize you heroes and build custom dungeons, as well as AI decks for both the evil Necromancer and the valiant heroes.  It has a little over a week to go, and if you are at all familiar with kickstarter you know that the final few days are always a wild ride to see how high it goes and how much more stuff is packed into it.  It is just about to unlock a Naiad hero (after already unlocking a Salamander hero (yes, Kings of War Nature fans, you are getting a couple of heroes), and they are hinting at Abyssals next.  Right now the $100 pledge gets you the base game plus extras – over 50 miniatures so far and growing! Check it out athttps://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1744629938/dungeon-saga-the-dwarf-kings-quest .

If you are a fan of board games with miniatures – Mars Attacks is on the horizon.  This is a fully playable out of the box game with no assembly required (ok, there is a tiny bit as you put the terrain together – but it is all snap fit and completely customizable).  It is scheduled to be released in September, but if you did not do the kickstarter for it you can pre-order it from the mantic web store http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/pre-order/mars-attacks-the-miniatures-game.html .  Yes, it includes a herd of flaming cows!  I picked up my kickstarter copy at Gencon where they had a limited number available, and have been having a lot of fun working through the various scenarios.   But in addition to the base game, they will soon be releasing an expansion to take it from a simple, scenario based board game to a fully fledged war game, where you can pick your own forces to save the earth or conquer it.  And those forces include giant bugs, big stompy robots, flying saucers, more heroes (including one riding a giant flea), flatbed trucks and specialized troops to help the humans (and what are the alien bounty hunters looking for anyway).    I personally can’t wait for my big bugs to get in so I can do a 1950’s style “Atomic Horror” game – giant insects against the army to see who can eat or save the civilians.

So now that we’ve got started on the sci-fi side of things, have you heard about the new DeadZone releases coming next month?  Forge Fathers – the greedy space armored space dwarfs will soon be available, as well as the Asterians – space elves that use robots for most of the fighting.  Plus two new expansion books are coming soon with the rules for these new models.  But don’t worry about your existing factions – the new Strider is coming soon (with options for use by the Enforcers, Rebs or Plague).  The Marauders are not left out either, as they get the new StuntBot!

I want to make sure everyone marks their calendars for some of the upcoming events next year.  Adepticon is March 19-23 2015 in Chicago, and they have a new venue that is much bigger, and are expanding to be much more than just a bunch of tournaments.  They promise to have a larger vendor hall, a 24-hour board game library, and even a specialized painting area with tables and lighting to do the last minute repairs on your armies.  It looks like I will be running a tournament and another big battle, plus teaching Kings of War (and maybe even more?)  Check it out at http://www.adepticon.org/ .

OH-Con is like the LGF, but up in Toledo.  This is their second year, and once again they will have a Kings of War tournament Friday evening.  It is April 17-19th, 2015 – more information soon to come at http://www.ohiohammer.com/ .  And if you don’t listen to their Mantic Radio podcast – well now is the time!

Lastly, even though most of you reading this are not even thinking about conventions next summer, you might want to at least mark your calendars forOrigins (June 5th-8th 2015) in Columbus, and Gencon (July 30th – August 3rd) in Indianapolis.  These conventions can sell out pretty fast, so if you are interested (oh, and did I mention I am running Kings of War tournaments at both of them?) you might want to put a reminder on your calendar as they usually start selling badges in January.

Ok, I’ve used up enough of the valuable bytes on your email feed – as always feel free to drop me a line at puggimer@gmail.com if you have any questions about events or any of the great Mantic games.

July 2014 Newsletter

So I’ve been going over ideas for this month’s newsletter for several weeks, and I have realized that I need to quit thinking about it and actually write it, or it won’t be coming this month!
So what is going on with Mantic lately?  Funny you should ask, as there is a lot to talk about (that I’m allowed to share (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) (actually I don’t know much that isn’t already public)).  So let’s get started.

Kickstarter.  Some people love it, some hate it, some have never heard of it.  Mantic loves Kickstarter, as it allows them to fund new development without going into debt for it, and to also judge the interest in new products.  Their next kickstarter kicks off on Monday, August 4th at 8:30 am EDT.  Dungeon Sagas: Dwarf Kings Quest (yes, it has been renamed) is the successor to the Dwarf Kings Hold board games.  It is a dungeon crawl, tile based miniature game for 2-5 players.  It is intended to fit between Descent and Super Dungeon Explore.  The base game allows for you to work through several scenarios, and then the advanced version allows you to customize your heroes and adds a lot more options.  Mantic is known for the great deal they give on their kickstarters , and the sweet spot for this one is supposed to be much less than their others – probably around $80 (as compared to $150 for the sweet spot for Mars Attacks or Dreadball).  The rumor is they won’t have an early bird special on this, but will have a special miniature for people who back in the first few days.

Speaking of Mars Attacks – it is now up for pre-order on the Mantic web store.  Those who participated in the kickstarter for this one should start receiving theirs at the end of August or beginning of December.  This looks to be a quick fun game – much more beer and pretzels level than Deadzone.  Just be aware that grunts on both sides are designed to die quickly (one hit kills a figure, unless they have “Heroic points” to spend – which of course are only available to heroes!).  The base game is martians, army and heroes – but the expansions include more fun thing like the Giant Stompy Robot, flying saucers and mutated giant insects.  I want to make a scenario that is the army vs. the giant insects – ala the old 1960’s atomic horror movies.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.  Before Mars Attacks comes out (or maybe at the same time), Gencon is coming.  It is actually only two weeks away now.  If you haven’t heard of it before, Gencon is the largest gaming convention in the US – four glorious days of playing games in Indianapolis IN.   Which makes it close enough for a day trip – and they have a special on Sunday – a family of four can get in Sunday for $30 with the Family Fun Package.  Or go all out for the four day pass.  I’ll be there teaching Kings of War – I’ll have 12 1,000 point armies ready to go so come by and learn this great game.  Plus we are doing the big battle again on Saturday night – and if you bring you own 1000 point army then you can still get in with generic tickets!  Let’s see how many miniatures we can get on a 16 foot wide table for the biggest game in North America!  Plus there are still openings for the Dreadball tournament, and while all the slots for Deadzone are sold out you may still be able to get in one of those events with a generic ticket, as people invariably fail to show up.

If you like Kings of War (and who doesn’t like the fast, strategic game of big fantasy battles?) then we will be starting our 2nd Kings of War Escalation League out of the Hobby Shop.  I’ve learned a few things from our first one, so this should go smoother and easier.  Once again we will be building 1000 pt armies, in groups of 400, 300 and 300 points.  But we’ve learned a bit, so you play the game with the points you built the previous month – so no one should end up coming in the first week looking for a game to only find people putting their models together.  In addition, we will be adding one Saturday a month to the league, for those who find it hard to make it on Monday nights, or to just get in a few more games.  Watch http://www.puggimer.net/kowleague.htm for updates, rules and more information.  Once again it will be no cost to participate, and we hope to have prizes at the end as well.

If you like competitive play, I also plan to cap off the league with a tournament in January, but this time it will be a 1500 points, with a 1000 point main list and a 500 point ally list.    Plus, I’m considering running a Kings of War Adepticon Primer in February, so that people can practice with their lists before the big Clash of Kings tournament.  Adepticon is the premier miniature event in North America.  This year it is moving to the Renaissance Schaumburg hotel in Chicago, and will be March 19th – 22nd.  With a larger venue, they are planning on expanding not only the existing events, but adding in a lot more as they grow from being a collection of tournaments into a real convention.

While you might already have it by now, the second wave of Deadzone kickstarter shipments are going out in August.  If you didn’t get in the kickstarter – they have a special deal on the 2nd wave figures on the Mantic web store – if you get the big package then it comes to close to 40% the ordinary price.

If you are a Dreadball fan, you haven’t been left out.  Mantic is currently shipping their limited edition Azure Forest pitches (the pitch is the playing field – i.e. game board), and have a deal on the very limited Azure Forest edition of the Dreadball base game.  The ordinary base game is currently out of stock as Mantic is in the process of making their fourth print run of this fast future sports game.  And Dreadball Xtreme is still scheduled to ship in November.

Well I’ve rattled on long enough now.  Feel free to email me with any questions you might have – I’ll share all I can and answer as much as possible.

Keep Playing Games

June 2014 Newsletter

So it is near the end of the month, and thus time for me to invade your inbox yet again with all the exciting things going on with Mantic.

First, a big thank you to everyone who came by to say hi and play a game at Origins two weeks ago.  It was a great, if exhausting, convention.  I ran 15 events and had a total of 99 people participate in them.  The big battle was a lot of fun on Saturday night, even if the evil artillery couldn't hit anything (thus paving the way for a good victory).  Evil is relentless, and shall be back at GenCon to wreak its revenge!

Did I mention GenCon?  Well for all the fun we had at Origins, we will be doing even more at GenCon from August 14th through the 18th.  While I'm taking it a little easier (only 14 events :-) ), because the initial tickets almost sold out I've committed to increasing all of my events to 12 players instead of 8 - so 50% more Kings of War!  50% more crushing of your enemies.  50% more lamentations of their women!  And I figure 50% less of my voice being left by Sunday afternoon!  If you haven't signed up for Gencon yet then badges are still $10 off until the June 29th and tickets are still available for nearly every session of my Learn to Play events.  In addition, I will be doing the same thing with the big battle - a ticket simply means you want to use one of my armies - if you bring your own 1000 pt list then you can get in with generics - we have 16 feet of table space - lets make this even bigger than Origins (which was 6000 pts per side).  The Gencon website is http://www.gencon.com/ to register.  Remember they have the "Family Fun Package" which is 4 Sunday badges for only $30 (and I have two sessions on Sunday, though only one ticket left).  Don't get discouraged if an event you want is sold out - often people who purchased tickets don't show up, and that opens slots for people with generics tickets to get in.

Gencon is still 8 weeks away (giving me time to finish my Forces of Nature and paint up an all new Twilight Kin army for the demos and big battle (plus adding two Abyssal Dwarf armies to my existing eight demo armies)), so what do we do in the meantime?  Well Monday night is Mantic night at the hobby shop.  Come on down from 6 to 8 (or a little after, they will let us stay to finish our games but we do have to be out by 9) every Monday night to meet up and play your favorite Mantic games.  I'd like to be talking about the culmination of our Deadzone league, but unfortunately too much real life got in the way of that, and it has slowly fizzled out.  However if you still want to get in a game, come on by.  I'll also have at least a 1000 pt Kings of War army with me, itching to play.  And I've always got Dreadball in my demo box, if you want to play the greatest sport game of all time!  Or we can just hang out and talk games and minis!

Speaking of Dreadball - the full game has sold out (for the fourth time!), and it will take a few months before they can get the fifth print run out (to once again be labeled as simply Dreadball (oh, and Dreadball Kickoff will NOT be reprinted once it is sold out)).  During the interim, the are releasing a special edition Dreadball Azure Forest addition, which is the full Dreadball set plus the Azure Forest expansion, and a special custom Azure Forest pitch (for those who haven't tried Dreadball yet, the pitch is the board the game is played on - it's an English thing).  This edition is strictly limited, but you can pick up a copy on the Mantic site.  (http://www.manticgames.com/ ), which is also where you can download free rules and army lists for Kings of War and Warpath.

If you are a Mantic fan, then you should already know that Mantic loves the Kickstarter model, having successfully run 6 Kickstarters. If you are a Deadzone Kickstarter backer, then the second (and I believe final) shipment is supposed to start shipping in July.  If you are a Mars Attacks Kickstarter backer then that is supposed to follow up in August, and they have mentioned that it might be available for pickup at Gencon!  Then the Dreadball Extreme Kickstarter is still scheduled to start shipping in November.  The big news however is the next kickstarter - Dwarf Kings Quest - the Return of the Necromancer - is going to go live in July!

Dwarf Kings Quest is a dungeon crawl miniature boardgame.  It will use thick cardboard tiles to create the dungeon, and have all new sculpts for heroes and monsters.  Slightly different than the previous Dwarf Kings Hold games where you had a small group of figures against an opponents group, this will feature a group of adventurers (a dwarf, barbarian, elf and wizard) who gain experience as they progress further and further into the dungeon each game, until they come up against the big boss himself.  But it is more than that, as there will also be advanced rules for using your own characters!  This is intended to be a 'small' kickstarter, and as such very affordable - so you won't have to worry about it breaking your wallet for several hundred dollars if you want everything.  For more details, check out the Mantic blog ( http://manticblog.com/2014/06/23/dkq-abandon-hope-all-ye-who-enter-here/ ).  This looks like a lot of fun to me, and promises to have some really great new minis as well.

Well I guess I've gone on long enough this month, and I haven't even touched on the release of the ruins sprues for Battlezone, because we all know that your terrain suffers from battle as much as your minis do.

Remember I'm your local resource for any questions about Mantic games, so feel free to drop me an email anytime!  Enjoy your summer, and play some games!

May 2014 Newsletter

It is hard to believe it has been another month.  Time once again to let everyone know what is happening on the Mantic gaming front in SW Ohio!

First up - the ongoing Deadzone league.  Unfortunately, the dead zone seems to be in the Hobby Shop on Monday evenings.  Whether school, work, family or other aspects of real life, but the league just isn't happening right now.  At best, we have had one league game in April, and no one (myself included (hanging my head in shame)) has completed painting a strike team yet.

After our wildly successful escalation league for Kings of War, we took a break, and I got feedback that people missed the regular gaming.  So I don't want to do that, but instead let's just make Monday nights Mantic nights at the Hobby Shop.  I'll be there with DeadZone, Dreadball, and at least one Kings of War army (1000 pts) to get any game in.   Hours will still be 6 - 9, though the doors close at 8 so we don't want to start any games after that.  (Six of us got together yesterday to play some Kings of War and had a lot of fun, so we might rekindle that).

I don't want to start the next Kings of War Escalation League until the end of the summer (400 pt games in September, 700 in October, 1000 in November sound good?)

But just because things are going a bit slowly right now in Dayton doesn't mean stuff isn't happening.  In just two short weeks (plus one day), Origins 2014 starts in Columbus.  I'll be there running Learn to Play events again (people had a ton of fun a these last year, and it brought in several people to the game who still enjoy it).  I'm not very ambitious, so I'm only running 14 of these over five days!  There is still plenty of room to sign up.  In addition, on Saturday night June 14th, I'll be running a Mega-Battle - I'll provide 8000 pts of armies (thus the 8 tickets), but I won't turn away anyone who brings their own 1000 pt army.  Starting at 8 pm, this should be lots of fun as we try to run a BIG game.

Not only do we plan on having a lot of fun at Origins, but I've got prizes for it as well.  All the events I'm running will be eligible for "Play to Win!" - I've got a couple of Kings of War hardback books and some army boxes (Basileans, Ogres and Abyssal Dwarfs) to give away.  Every one who participates in a game will get a ticket, and I'll draw a few during the convention (every 3 sessions or at least 20 players).  On Sunday after my 12:00pm session (at 2:00) I'll be redrawing for any prizes that haven't been picked up, as well as for a 2 player starter box (Undead v. Orcs & Goblins).  So come and play, and you might take home a new army!

And speaking of big, Gencon is coming in August.  I'm running the same events as at Origins, but being much bigger many of these sold out on the first day of registration.  Never one to shirk a challenge, I've increased all of these at GenCon to allow for up to 12 people instead of just 8 - and yes, this means I need to get some more armies finished before then.  So come and give Twilight Kin or Nature a try.  I'll have every army available except for the Abyssals (instead having two Abyssal Dwarf armies), so whether you want to learn the game or just give a different army a try, this is a great chance to do it.

In other news, the rest of the Abyssal Dwarfs should start shipping this week - though they do seem to take their sweet time crossing the ocean to get here.  In addition, all the new Battlezone sets should also start shipping as well.  I've heard a rumor that the new ruined scenery set will go up for pre-order soon as well, but that is several places removed, so don't blame the messenger if the message is wrong.  If you are a Deadzone kickstarter backer, then your final shipment should be going out in July.  And then in August, the martians will finally land as the Mars Attacks! kickstarter ships!  Lastly, keep you eyes out in July for the new Dwarf Kings Hold kickstarter - which may also include the new Kings of War skirmish game!  If you can, Mantic's kickstarters are ALWAYS a fantastic deal on lots of cool miniatures,

Ok, I've rambled on long enough this month.  I hope to see a lot of you at Origins, as well as bring in some new faces to the hobby.  Have a great summer, and happy gaming!

April 2014 Newsletter

Welcome to the first of (hopefully) many monthly newsletters helping you to stay up to date on everything Mantic in Southwest Ohio and the midwest.

First, I want to let everyone know that I will never distribute your email address anywhere, and do not intend to share it with anyone.  If anyone does not wish to receive these emails, please email me back at puggimer@gmail.com and let me know.

Just so everyone knows, my name is Mike Carter, and I'm your friendly local (to Dayton Ohio) Mantic Pathfinder.  That means I run and support Kings of War, Dead Zone, Dreadball and (eventually) Mars Attacks and Warpath events and tournaments.  By day I'm a computer programmer, but I like to get away from staring at the CRT screen after work, so I paint and play with toy soldiers.

If any of you are ever feeling bored and can't sleep - I do have a website where I try to post pictures of my various armies - some of them are fun and have won a few small awards - feel free to check it out at http://puggimer.net.  In addition, this will be the place to check out any rules packs for events that I will be running in the future, as well as current league results for whatever league I happen to be running at the moment.

So, what events are coming up?  Currently we are running a DeadZone league out of the Hobby Shot in south Dayton.  We meet Monday nights from 6 - 9 (the store officially closes at 8, but they let us finish our games if we have started them).  The league officially starts in May, so if you are in the area and want to join, feel free.  Speaking of free, that is the cost of the league as well.  So far we have ten people signed up and it looks to be a good time for all.

I had talked to some people about running a big Kings of War game in May, but unfortunately it doesn't looks like I will be able to fit this into my schedule.  However if you need a Kings of War fix, how about stopping by during your trip to Origins in June?  Origins is a large gaming convention held in Columbus Ohio over summer, this year running from June 11th to June 15th.  I will be running 14 sessions of "Learn to Play Kings of War", where I will have 8 1000 pt armies and teach you this fast, fun fantasy mass combat game.  Then on Saturday night I will be running a big battle (at least 4000 pts per side) - come and play or bring your own army to add to the fun.  The Origins website is http://originsgamefair.com/ .

If you have been hiding under a rock then you won't have heard about the new Kings of War releases this month and next.  A new supplement, "Hellfire and Steel" is coming out (released 4/26, but it takes some time to get to this side of the pond) detailing a campaign between the Dwarfs and Abyssal Dwarfs.  They also have some cool new figures - Sveri Egalix (playtested as Taz the Well 'Ard) is simply a beautiful figure of a berserker lord riding a giant badger, and makes me almost want to start my own KoW dwarf army just to have this figure.  All of the Abyssal Dwarf units that were funded from the Kings of War kickstarter are also being released, as well as finally getting the Dwarf Brock Riders available as a separate unit.  If you haven't checked out the new releases at http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/pre-order/advance-order-kings-of-war.html then now is the time to do so.

Not only does Kings of War get some great new models, but Battlezones are coming.  If you have DeadZone then you know who great this sci-fi terrain is - battlezones are the new brand for all Mantics terrain kit.  The base Urban distric kit is what comes in the Deadzone box, but is now available with the fortifications and landing pad.  Even if you play some other sci-fi game, these new kits are a great way to build up terrain for your games.  And the new damaged terrain sprues will be coming out soon - I have a couple of these for you to check out at our Deadzone league nights.

If you ever have any questions about Mantics game - feel free to email me.  If I don't have the answer I can always ask some smarter people for it.

Now that spring is finally here, I hope eveyone can enjoy a bit of nice weather.  Try taking your gaming table outside, to get some sunshine and natural light as you mercilessly beat your friends at your favorite miniature game!
