Carpe Noctem: Not quite the final update

Not quite the final update, but probably close. I have a few pictures I wanted to add to my site, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. This weekend is the final stop for the Grateful Undead's Olde World Tour 2009 - the Marauder's Mayhem Autumn Rage Indy GT in Kettering (suburb of Dayton) Ohio. I have pictures of some of the awards the army won, and I want to add a couple of the 'tour' t-shirts I made to wear to the tournaments.

I did want to say thanks for all the encouragement and support from everyone on this forum. In the immortal words of the band, "What a long, strange trip it's been!"

Carpe Noctem: Quick Update

Just a quick update. I've done pretty well with the Grateful Undead this summer - Taking best painted at Origins, winning a 500 pt tourney at GenCon and taking Best Army there, and Best Painted at a local RTT. The last planned tournament right now is another local IndyGT next month.

Right now the army is at my local games store on display in one of their cabinets (along with my Orc & Goblin army - the United Greenskin Postal Service).

Next up I think I need to do a shooty army, and I've never cared much for pansies, I mean elves. So it looks like I'm doing dwarfs.

Carpe Noctem: New army pictures

Ok, I probably broke the old links updating my web page with the new pictures (yeah new digital camera). For the links to the full size images, go to my site at

So without further ado:

A shot of the entire army (well, the army that won Best Army - I still have 40 zombies to paint and the Hells Angels to finish as well)

Jerry Garcia - Lead Guitar - Vampire Lord - General (w/skeletons)

Phil Lesh - Bass Guitar - Vampire (w/ghouls)

Ron "Pigpen" McKernan - Keyboards - Vampire (w/skeletons)

Bill Kreutzmann - Drums - Necromancer (Corpse Cart)

Souvenir Stand (Corpse cart)

Skulls & Roses (skeletons)

Dancing Skeletons (skeletons)

Roadies (ghouls)

Deadheads (zombies)

Dancing Teddy Bears (Dire Wolves)

Stoners (Spirit Hosts)

Groupies (Cairn Wraiths w/ Banshee)

Lastly - the new Hells Angels running Security (Blood Knights)

Well, I think I'm done - at least for now. Heading to a Indy GT this weekend.

I've loaded some new pictures on my site ( ) feel free to check them out. (Full size ones)

Here is one of the entire army on the display base:

About the only other unit I can think of would be a corpse cart - but only if I could find a 4" model of a VW van - or a bus as a tour bus.

I'm not happy with the bears - I need to look for some alternatives, but not right now - maybe by the October Indy GT.

Carpe Noctem: First concert

Well, the Grateful Undead had their first 'concert' this past weekend at Origins - and took home Best Army there! So not too shabby.

But I haven't stopped. In less than two weeks I'm going to a Indy GT (Buckeye Battles III) - and I figure the band needs some security - so they did what the Rolling Stones did and hired the Hells Angels.

5 converted Ork bikers as KoBK to give the army some hitting power. Two options to add them to 2250 - either drop a unit of wolves and all the core (skeletons and ghouls) to 10 (and lose a magic level for the lord) - thus making a pretty hard list. Or going w/ 4 KoBK, only 3 wraiths (2 + banshee), and no magic level upgrades or extra dice for casters (thus only 7 power dice), but full units of skeletons and ghouls.

Still working on some newer pictures.

Carpe Noctem: paint on the models

Yes, it is a day that many thought would never come. And truly it hasn't, quite yet - but it is significantly closer.

Yes, I finally have some paint on the models. Just in time, as I want to play this army at Origins this weekend!

Still need to finish all the bases, but here are several updates:

First, my favorite, Skulls and Roses

The dancing skeletons

The roadies

The stoners (these also will have smoke added after the bases are done)

The groupies

and half the deadheads (being rushed for time, I'm not attempting to paint the other 40 zombies yet)

I'm still not used to my wife's camera, but getting a little better.

Carpe Noctem: Back at it

Well I was working out of town for three months, but finally got back and committed myself to a tournament in July, and maybe even one in June, so I actually got working again. Some new pictures

The zombies - or deadheads as I like to call them

These are the spirit hosts - they will be surrounded by the clouds of smoke from those funny smelling 'cigarettes' they are puffing on. It wasn't until I looked at the pictures that I realized that I ended up duplicating the heads on the bases, so some head swaps are in order.

A newer shot of the dancing bears

And a couple of the band (characters). I'm having problems getting these pics to come out, so they aren't so great.

I decided to put the drum set in the corpse cart with the drummer, though I'm keeping the t-shirts around it.

Lastly, a group shot of all 238 models!
